Brett Kay and Austin Hedges Catching Camp

JSerra High School baseball head coach Brett Kay and former Lion, Austin Hedges, will host the inaugural Brett Kay and Austin Hedges Catching Camp at JSerra High School on December 22nd and 23rd.

Kay, a former 8th round pick of the New York Mets out of Cal State Fullerton, along with Hedges, a 2011 second round pick of the Padres, have been discussing the camp for some time. It was always a matter of making the time in both of their schedules.

"(Austin) and I discussed doing our own camp for years" said Kay, who was a 35th round pick out of Mater Dei High School. "It came to fruition this off-season for him."

The camp is limited to 25 enrollees and will include film review, film study, classroom sessions, and breakdown of game management skills.

"We wanted to not only divulge into the physical aspect of the position, but break down situational management with videos of game situations to break down different calls and such," said Kay.

In addition to Kay and Hedges, campers will receive instruction from former JSerra and LMU catcher, Colton Plaia, who is currently in the New York Mets farm system. Some local high school catchers will serve as instructors as well.

The instruction along with the low camper-to-instructor ratio should provide an incredible learning environment for players serious about catching in high school and beyond.

" It should be a new, different dynamic than any camp I have done before," said Kay.
