Game 2 Recap:

The Red team has opened up a 2-0 lead in the fifth annual red/gold series. They won Wednesday's second game by a final score of 8-2, although the game was much closer than the score would indicate. The Red team scored 7 runs in the final two innings to put it out of reach. The gold team opened with a run in the first when junior Josh Morgan (UCLA) doubled to right, scoring senior Erich Glastetter who had singled and stole second. The Red team would tie the game at one in the top of the fourth on a walk, error, sac bunt and an rbi single by senior Matt Stumme (Westmont). The gold team would quickly jump back on top in the bottom of the fourth. Morgan singled with one out, stole second, and scored on junior Garett King's RBI single to the opposite field. The red team took the lead for good in the top of the sixth with a three run inning. Senior Dalton Frize (LMU) doubled to lead off the inning and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Brad Rinehart (Cal Baptist) doubled in two more runs (his third and fourth of the series). Freshmen Grant Horwitz also got an RBI on a fielder's choice with the bases loaded. The Red team added four more runs in the top of the seventh on an RBI single by Stumme, and a two-run double by junior Colin Brecheen. Senior Zac Walker got the win for the red team by scattering 6 hits and giving up two earned runs. Freshmen Chris Burica threw two shutout innings to earn the save. Junior Lance Simpson started the game for the Gold team. Although only giving up one hit, the right-hander walked 5 and had to be removed after four innings. He left with a 2-1 lead. Freshman Cole Spear took the loss.

Game 3 of the Red/Gold Series will be Friday night (2/8/13) at 6:00pm at Hart.

Game 1 Recap:

The red team took game 1 of the 5th annual Red/Gold series by a score of 5-4. Senior Mike Simonis got the win after a very strong start for the Red team. Simonis went 5 and a third innings only giving up 2 hits. The red team jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first off Lancer ace Garett King (Nebraska). King walked senior Jason Martin (LBSU) to lead off the game. Travis Blue bunted him to second and after an infield single by Dalton Frize (LMU), Chris Major hit a sacrifice fly to right field. The Red team would extend their lead to 4-0, after a 3 run third. With one out, King again walked Martin, which was followed by singles to Blue and Frize to load the bases. Major would drive in his second run of the game on a deep sac fly to right. With two outs, senior Brad Rinehart (Cal Baptist) delivered a 2-run triple to right. The Red would again strike for a run in the fourth, thanks to some defensive mistakes by the Gold team, to extend its lead to 5-0. The Gold team made a great comeback attempt by scoring 3 in the sixth and 1 in the seventh. The Gold got a leadoff single from Ryan Schroth and a walk by Joey Sanchez (LBSU) against Simonis. Simonis would then record a strikeout before being replaced by the bullpen. Josh Morgan (UCLA) laced a double over the left fielder's head to drive in a pair of runs. After a wild pitch pushed Morgan to third, Leo Hernandez hit a ball to left center that would score Morgan, making it 5-3. The Gold team would make interesting in the 7th. After two quick outs, Schroth singled and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Sanchez would have a 9 pitch at bat that lead to an RBI single to make it 5-4. Sanchez advanced to second on an errant throw to the plate. However, Rinehart was able to get a hard ground out to end the game.

Game 2 will be Wednesday night at 6:00pm at Hart Park.
