Coach Raul Lara had a perfectly simple game plan to attack the vaunted Mission Viejo defense, but he needed his team to believe they could execute. Behind a physical and athletic line, the Jackrabbits relied on the legs of Manu Luuga and Gerard Wicks to run away with a 21-16 win in the CIF SS Quarterfinals. Poly advances to face St. John Bosco in the semifinals.
Poly used its speed to expose the Mission Viejo defense which hadn't played a team with anywhere near that skill level. The Jackrabbits were pumped from the outset while it took Mission Viejo time to really get involved.
Mission Viejo QB Ian Fieber played a very good game in limited throwing opportunities. Fieber was 8 of 10 for 138 yards in the first half. All-everything WR/S Max Redfield was limited to three catches for 38 yards in the first half before exploding in the second half. Despite the success through the air the Diablos continued to try and pound the ball without much success.
The loss brings to an end what was a great season for the Diablos. As the players walked off the field in tears it was easy to see what they let slip away.
