The Orange Lutheran Lancers fell short in their comeback attempt losing 5-3 to the Sarasota Sailors. Brent Wheatley was chased from the game after allowing 4 runs in the third inning. Chris Wichmann went the rest of the way allowing zero runs on four hits. The defense again let the Lancers down by committing an error, but the play that changed the game occurred on a ball that dropped between catcher Matt Stumme and first baseman Tommy Bell. With the bases loaded and one out in the third in a 1-1 game, the Sarasota batter hit a foul ball pop-up on the first base side. Stumme and Bell converged on it but neither took charge and the ball fell between them. On the next pitch, Sarasota got a bases clearing double to take a 5-1 lead knocking Wheatley out of the game.
Wichmann was in complete control from there on out keeping the Lancers in the game, getting the big out when they needed it most. Orange Lutheran rallied with two runs in the sixth inning to make it 5-3. In the seventh the Lancers loaded the bases after a couple of Sarasota errors bringing Cody Nulph to the plate with two outs. Nulph hit a rocket shot right at the third baseman who stepped on the bag and threw to first base for the game ending double play. It was the sixth first-pitch out for the Lancers on the day.
Orange Lutheran fell to the consolation bracket with the loss and will face Brookwood of Georgia in a game on Friday at 9:30AM.
